THE BIBLE: INERRANT, INFALLIBLE OR WHAT?

If you follow this blog, you already know that I’m planning to share my personal theology here this summer. When I decided to do that, there were about a thousand different issues running through my head that I wanted to address.

But, then I stopped and thought about it. (I hate when that happens, sometimes; thinking things through frequently causes me to abandon what might have been some of my most glorious moments. Or, you know, the other thing, where I put my foot in my mouth, so there’s that.) This time, however, it was probably a good thing. I DO want to address a whole lot of those things, but I’m realizing that I first need to deal with something that underlies a lot of my theology. PASTOR JOE IS 60 YEARS OLD, SO WATCH OUT!

Friends,

Last April, I had my 60th birthday. It’s taken me 3 months to process this fact (you move a little slower with age) and I think that I’m about ready to actually begin my seventh decade for real.

These tenth anniversary birthdays become more significant as you get older. When I turn 50, I was feeling pretty healthy and vigorous. Then one day my dentist recommended that I see my doctor to check on my blood pressure. They’d checked it during a routine dental appointment and felt that it was too high. WHY CHURCH?

Friends,

I recently read a blog written by a young woman whose insight I’ve been following for some time. I like the way she writes and I find a lot of wisdom and clear thinking in a lot of her writing.

One thing, however, kind of stumps me. Although she is a long time believer and a genuine follower of Jesus Christ, she has stopped attending church on a regular basis.

She still travels and speaks before large groups of Christians. She is lauded for her insights by prestigious and progressive Christian organizations, including churches and their pastors. She speaks out about the needs of the church of today and our blind spots that need to be addressed. Continue reading “WHY CHURCH?”
